Hyperpigmentation
“Hyperpigmentation” refers to an increase in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to the skin, causing dark patches or spots to form. It can occur anywhere on the body, but it is most seen on the face, hands, and other areas frequently exposed to the sun. There are several causes of hyperpigmentation, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medications. Common types of hyperpigmentation include age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation can be treated with topical creams, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser therapy, or other cosmetic procedures. Sun protection is also important in preventing further hyperpigmentation.
